Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds large raw shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Shrimp

  • Rinse the shrimp briefly under cool water and pat them completely dry. Remove any remaining shells or veins. Dry shrimp will hold the seasoning better and develop a beautiful grilled texture.

Season the Shrimp

  • Place the shrimp in a large mixing bowl. Add olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Toss gently until every shrimp is evenly coated with the seasonings.

Prepare the Barbecue Sauce

  • Add barbecue sauce, honey, and lemon juice to a small bowl. Stir until smooth and well combined. The honey adds sweetness, while lemon juice gives the sauce a fresh, bright flavor.

Thread the Skewers

  • Thread the seasoned shrimp onto skewers. Leave a little space between each shrimp for even cooking. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water beforehand to reduce burning during grilling.

Preheat the Grill

  • Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the cooking surface if needed. A properly heated grill helps the shrimp cook quickly and creates attractive grilled marks.

Grill the Shrimp

  • Place the shrimp skewers on the hot grill. Cook for about two to three minutes on each side. Turn them carefully with tongs until they become pink, opaque, and lightly charred.

Add the Barbecue Sauce

  • Brush the shrimp with barbecue sauce during the final minute of cooking. Turn them once and brush the other side. Avoid adding too much sauce too early, because it can burn quickly.

Check and Serve

  • Remove the shrimp as soon as they are fully cooked. Serve the skewers immediately with lemon wedges and fresh parsley. Add extra barbecue sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Choose large shrimp because they are easier to grill.
  • Pat the shrimp dry before adding seasonings.
  • Do not overcook the shrimp, or they may become rubbery.
  • Keep the grill hot for better browning.
  • Turn the skewers gently to prevent shrimp from falling.
  • Use spicy barbecue sauce for extra heat.
  • Add cayenne pepper for a stronger kick.
  • Mix chopped cilantro into the finished dish.
  • Add pineapple pieces between the shrimp for sweetness.
  • Try bell pepper and onion pieces for colorful skewers.
  • Use lemon zest for a brighter citrus flavor.
