Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter optional

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C. This step is important for even baking. A hot oven helps the bread rise quickly. Line a baking tray with paper or lightly grease it.

Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, add flour, baking soda and salt. Mix them well using a spoon. Make sure everything is evenly combined. This ensures the bread has a balanced texture.

Add the Buttermilk

  • Pour buttermilk slowly into the bowl. Mix gently with your hands or spoon. Do not overmix. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky. This keeps the bread light.

Shape the Dough

  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Shape it into a round loaf. Do not knead too much. Place it on the baking tray. Use a knife to cut a cross on top.

Bake the Bread

  • Place the tray in the oven. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown. Tap the bottom of the bread. If it sounds hollow, it is ready.

Cool Before Serving

  • Remove the bread from the oven. Let it cool for 10 minutes. This helps the texture settle. Slice and enjoy warm with butter or jam.

Notes

  • Use fresh buttermilk for best flavor
  • Do not overmix the dough
  • Add raisins for a sweet version
  • Mix in herbs for savory taste
  • Use whole wheat flour for a healthier option
  • Bake immediately after mixing
