Ingredients

  • 6 cups fresh apple cider
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 whole allspice berries
  • 1 medium orange
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 small apple thinly sliced
  • 1 small piece fresh ginger
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg

Instructions

Prepare the Orange and Spices

  • Wash the orange well and slice it into thin rounds. Gather the cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, ginger and nutmeg. Preparing everything first makes the cooking process simple and smooth.

Combine the Cider

  • Pour the fresh apple cider into a large saucepan. Add the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries, ginger and nutmeg. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to combine everything.

Warm the Cider Slowly

  • Place the saucepan over medium heat. Warm the cider until it becomes hot, but do not let it boil. Gentle heating helps the spices release their wonderful flavor without making the cider bitter.

Simmer the Spiced Cider

  • Reduce the heat to low once the cider becomes hot. Let it gently simmer for about 20 minutes. Stir occasionally and enjoy the beautiful apple, orange and cinnamon aroma filling your kitchen.

Add Maple Syrup and Vanilla

  • Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the maple syrup and vanilla extract. Taste the cider carefully. Add a little more maple syrup if you prefer a sweeter and richer drink.

Strain Before Serving

  • Place a fine-mesh strainer over a large heatproof bowl or pitcher. Carefully pour the cider through the strainer. This removes the whole spices and orange pieces, leaving a smooth drink.

Serve the Hot Cider

  • Pour the warm cider into heatproof mugs. Add a fresh apple slice or small cinnamon stick for garnish. Serve immediately while the drink is warm, fragrant and comforting.

Notes

  • Use fresh apple cider for the best natural apple flavor.
  • Never boil the cider because high heat can change its fresh taste.
  • Adjust the maple syrup according to your preferred sweetness.
  • Add lemon slices for a brighter flavor.
  • Use extra ginger for a stronger warming taste.
  • Add star anise for a deeper spice flavor.
  • For a richer drink, add a small splash of caramel syrup.
  • For adults, a small amount of bourbon can create a festive version.
  • Keep the drink alcohol-free when serving children.
  • Taste before serving and adjust the sweetness if needed.
