Ingredients

  • 4 medium green tomatoes firm, unripe.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour.
  • 1 cup cornmeal medium grind.
  • 2 large eggs.
  • 1 cup buttermilk.
  • 1 tsp salt.
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper.
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder.
  • Vegetable oil for frying about 1/2 inch deep.
  • Optional: Hot sauce for dipping.

Instructions

Slice the Tomatoes

  • Wash tomatoes well. Cut into 1/2-inch thick slices. Pat dry with paper towels. Discard ends.

Set Up Breading Stations

  • Mix flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder in first bowl. Whisk eggs and buttermilk in second. Pour cornmeal in third.

Dredge the Slices

  • Dip each slice in flour mixture. Shake off excess. Then into egg mix. Finally, coat with cornmeal. Press gently.

Heat the Oil

  • Pour oil into skillet. Heat over medium-high to 350°F. Test with a sprinkle of cornmeal—it should sizzle.

Fry the Tomatoes

  • Add slices in single layer. Fry 2-3 minutes per side until golden. Don't overcrowd. Flip with tongs.

Drain and Serve

  • Remove to paper towels. Sprinkle light salt. Serve hot with sauce. Enjoy right away

Notes

  • Use firm green tomatoes for best crunch—avoid ripe ones.
  • Keep oil at 350°F; too hot burns breading.
  • Add Cajun seasoning to cornmeal for spice.
  • Variation: Bake at 425°F for 20 mins (flip halfway) for healthier version.
  • Variation: Top with pimento cheese for a melty twist.
  • Double cornmeal for extra crisp.
