Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Soften the Butter

  • Take butter out of the fridge early. Let it sit at room temperature. It should feel soft but not melted. Soft butter mixes better. This step helps create smooth and creamy frosting without lumps.

Beat the Butter

  • Place butter in a mixing bowl. Use a mixer to beat it well. Beat for about 2–3 minutes. It should look light and fluffy. This adds air and gives the frosting a soft texture.

Add Powdered Sugar

  • Slowly add powdered sugar to the butter. Mix on low speed first. Then increase speed. This prevents sugar from flying out. Mix until smooth and well combined with butter.

Add Milk and Vanilla

  • Pour in milk and vanilla extract. Mix again until smooth. The frosting should look creamy now. Add a pinch of salt to balance sweetness. This step improves flavor and texture.

Adjust the Texture

  • If frosting feels thick, add a little more milk. If too thin, add more sugar. Mix well after each change. This helps you get perfect spreading consistency for cakes or cupcakes.

Final Whip

  • Beat the frosting for one more minute. This makes it extra light and fluffy. The texture should be smooth and easy to spread. Your buttercream is now ready to use.

Notes

  • Use room temperature butter for best results
  • Sift powdered sugar for smooth frosting
  • Add cocoa powder for chocolate flavor
  • Use food color for fun designs
  • Add lemon zest for fresh taste
  • Do not overmix after adding milk
