Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp chopped jalapeños optional, for heat

Instructions

Melt the Butter Base

  • Heat butter in saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour. Stir for 1 minute until smooth. No lumps!

Add the Milk Slowly

  • Pour in milk bit by bit. Whisk constantly. Cook until thick, like gravy. About 3 minutes.

Mix in Cream Cheese

  • Drop in softened cream cheese. Stir until fully melted and silky. Keep heat low.

Stir in Shredded Cheddar

  • Add cheddar in handfuls. Whisk until cheese melts completely. Smooth and glossy now.

Season with Spices

  • Sprinkle garlic powder, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well. Taste and adjust.

Add Jalapeños if You Dare

  • Mix in chopped jalapeños for a spicy twist. Simmer 1 minute. Remove from heat.

Serve Right Away

  • Pour into bowl. Dig in with pretzels! Keeps warm in a fondue pot.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded cheese—it melts better than pre-shredded.
  • Low heat prevents curdling; stir often.
  • Make it vegan: Swap cheeses for cashew-based alternatives and coconut milk.
  • Spicy version: Double jalapeños or add hot sauce.
  • Mild kid-friendly: Skip spices and use mild cheddar.
  • Thin it out: Add extra milk for nacho dip.
  • Bake it: Transfer to oven-safe dish, top with breadcrumbs, broil 2 mins.
